Nobody is trying to regulate yoga. Nobody is busting into my matha and telling me how to practice and how to teach. They are telling me how to run my business though. This is about the business of yoga, an area that has really been neglected by Yoga Alliance. Mark Davis made comments like “It’s a six-billion dollar industry now, it’s no longer fringe, it’s mainstream. The yoga community has to act like other businesses out there.” Other “businesses out there” do not just lie down and accept government regulations that may do more harm than good. They have professional organizations that lobby and act on their behalf. Another comment., “Ten years ago Yoga Alliance…foresaw this would happen” Really? Thanks for telling us! Is it true that Yoga Alliance prevented “undue restrictions on the practice of yoga” by “setting voluntary compliance standards to set the benchmark for a future possibility of licensing”. (Mark Davis, letter May 13 2009)

It doesn’t matter if you think it shouldn’t happen, or if theoretically it sounds impossible to you…. because it is indeed happening as we write this.
