Yoga is not run by the corporate yoga moguls anymore. It is in the process of being reshaped, and however you want to see it, the truth is that Yoga Alliance has abused the ENTIRE Yoga World for their own profit and gain for far too long. It is time for a new entity to be formed. An entity that is not controlled by corporate money, but by the people and lineages of yoga, where all lineages have a say and participation. You cannot provide that, nor will you ever have the capacity to provide that fair of an option… As a matter a fact, the best solution that Yoga Alliance has come up with is Licensing and Regulation via a bureaucratic Government that knows nothing about teaching yoga.

The more of a generalist you are – i.e. any style of yoga, anywhere, for anyone – the harder it will be for you to grow your practice. Beyond your own personality, it will be hard for you to stand out (which won’t really help when you’re having a bad day!).

Whether or not Yoga Alliance can set the record straight by apologizing to the yoga public for mis-leading them for over a decade, denouncing any participation in the nationwide Regulation and Licensing of Yoga fiasco with John Davis, crying corporate until they were forced to to a 180 and publicly apologize for their misdeeds, is REALLY inconsequential in the larger scheme of things.

Nobody is trying to regulate yoga. Nobody is busting into my matha and telling me how to practice and how to teach. They are telling me how to run my business though. This is about the business of yoga, an area that has really been neglected by Yoga Alliance. Mark Davis made comments like “It’s a six-billion dollar industry now, it’s no longer fringe, it’s mainstream. The yoga community has to act like other businesses out there.” Other “businesses out there” do not just lie down and accept government regulations that may do more harm than good. They have professional organizations that lobby and act on their behalf. Another comment., “Ten years ago Yoga Alliance…foresaw this would happen” Really? Thanks for telling us! Is it true that Yoga Alliance prevented “undue restrictions on the practice of yoga” by “setting voluntary compliance standards to set the benchmark for a future possibility of licensing”. (Mark Davis, letter May 13 2009)

For years, successful yoga teachers have been their own boss. That means that they became solution focused entrepreneurs. Anyone bogged down in the semantics of “classifying” yoga, has blinders on as they ride the bus. It isn’t about who’s right and who’s wrong, it’s about how you can grow… how you can surpass your own limitations. Instead of being led by pseudo spiritual corporate marketing, earn more money by getting better at the things you should have been doing in the first place.

Without knowing it, the idea of Yoganomics was percolating in my head through talking to my customers at Yoga Journal magazine…. Yoganomics is a byproduct of my employment at Yoga Journal. It was a term I came up with in 2006, while I was at home. I knew that what I was hearing from advertisers was that I need to be less sales pitch, less assumed information and a little more factual data. From that point on, any success I had at Yoga Journal was because of my realistic approach, and for the most part business people need to make an informed decisions and be able to identify the problems and find a workable solution.
